Style Exercise Feat. Torvi

Description

The last few weeks were crazy - my laptop's logic board burnt up and had to be replaced, my mom flew out to visit for a week, and there were exams all on top of that. So, I drew Torvi a bunch of times and in a bunch of different styles to get back in the swing of free-time things.

This was actually quite fun to do - picking apart each of the different styles to see how things like Torvi's eyes and feathers would translate really forced me to look critically at my own style and how it works. It was a learning experience, to say the least.

I chose Jason Goad as the pro artist to emulate in the 'Favorite Artist' category because his illustration style is quite different from my own, and I thought that it would be a good challenge to attempt. Also, he did the cover art for my second favorite Offspring album. :}} You all can find his art here: ingoadwetrust.com/

I've never attempted to draw anything in shoujo style before. I realized just now that I could've taken advantage of Torvi's bird-like appearance to make a Hatoful Boyfriend reference. Darnit.

Disney!Torvi seems to fit the best into the Treasure Planet universe, considering the sci-fi-ish feel of the movie.

Realistic!Torvi was interesting to draw. I went back to the original inspiration for her species' feather crests - cockatoos - and went from there. The thing I seem to forget a lot of the time is that the feather crests are not always flared out like often draw them. They're mostly air, so when they lay flat, they'd likely look like Torvi's crest does here.

Ah, Pokemon. I've only seen a bit of the show, have never played the video games (aside from occasionally playing Pokemon Stadium), and only ever owned one card (it was a Ponyta - I remember that clearly enough). Instead of making Torvi a trainer, I made her a pokemon instead. I dunno. Some combination of Flygon, Braviary, and Charizard?

:iconprezleek: 's comics are always a laugh, and their style is super expressive and instantly recognizable, so of course I had to try my hand at emulating their style! I probably had the most fun with this one, mainly because of the sheer expressiveness of the style, as well as the exaggerated features. :D

I can't do anything with my eyes closed. I had originally intended to try drawing with my left hand, but it's worse than useless when it comes to writing or drawing, so I just closed my eyes and prayed that whatever I did didn't look like spoiled spaghetti.

Oh, cool!

I like realistic!Torvi. Not as much as normal Torvi, but she looks interesting.
